There’s a new pizza joint in town and it’s serving up organic, fresh ingredient-filled pizzas. Unlike most pizza establishments, this one is on wheels, and unlike most food trucks, this one is helping to save our city, one pie at a time.
Neapolitan Express’s facility is powered purely by alternative energy, using just one fueling source, Compressed Natural Gas, to energize its generators. The truck also has a trusty solar panel on its roof so with all their efforts, Neapolitan Express reduces its Carbon emissions by 90% and its Nitrogen emissions by 87%. If these words and numbers don’t mean much, Neapolitan Express has the lowest emissions of any food truck on the road.
Each pizza is made with the best quality ingredients, starting with D.O.P. (Denominazione di Origine Protetta, meaning Protected Designation of Origin) Double Zero Caputo unbleached Flour, which is responsible for the light and airy crust and can be seen in many Neapolitan pizza makers pantries. Also going into the mix are D.O.P. San Marzano Tomatoes, which are of course, organic and have a much stronger, sweeter flavor, to add to the depth of flavor there’s fresh, locally grown basil and last but not least, what separates these pies from its peers is the daily made mozzarella.
Four types of pies are offered and can be served in ninety seconds using the electric Cuppone ovens installed in the truck; Margherita, Marinara, Bufala, and the Cioccolato, which all taste like they’ve been pulled right out of an oven in Italy. Their minimalistic menu allows them to focus on quality and the amazing taste of each pie, including the Cioccolato which should not be disregarded. (It’s filled with Italian-imported Nutella, and yes, it does make a difference).
A design choice by founder, Max Crespo, allows the fear factor of a food truck to be eradicated since their truck is totally transparent from the chefs’ waist up, giving eaters the reassurance of freshness and hygiene, as well as an awesome view of the pizza preparation which can be seen from several locations; from the West Village at W13th Street and 9th Avenue to Midtown East at 53rd Street and Park Avenue.
If you think it’s inconvenient to eat a whole pie in the street, Neapolitan Express have thought of that too, and serve their pies in boxes with lids that can conveniently be transformed into plates and then into an inconspicuous half pizza box, if you want to save some for later.
DOWNTOWN’s verdict? This food truck guarantees the quality of an authentic Italian pizzeria with the speed of a 99c slice.
